After you download images from your EOS 6D to your computer and back them up, it’s a good idea to format your cards before using them again, even if you didn’t fill them. Doing this ensures you’ll have a full card to work with and won’t download duplicate images when you download them to your computer. To format an SD card:

Press the Set button.
The menu changes to show the amount of data on the card and displays a warning that all data will be lost.
Rotate the Quick Control dial to highlight OK and press Set.
The card is formatted. After formatting, you have a blank card that’s ready to capture images from the camera.
There is also an option called a Low-Level format, which totally erases all data on the card and resets it to its default condition. To enable Low-Level format, press the Erase button that looks like a garbage can to enable the feature and then perform Step 6. It’s a good idea to do a Low-Level format every now and again to restore your cards to an almost-new condition.
The only way you can restore images from a card that’s been formatted is with a data recovery program. Make sure you’ve downloaded all images to your computer before you format a card.
Press the shutter button halfway to exit the menu and resume taking pictures.

- Press the front Shutter button repeatedly (5x) to access the Preferences menu (gear icon).
- Press the side Mode button repeatedly until 'FORMAT' is highlighted.
