INTRODUCTION Guests from overseas of non-indian origin are accommodated at Dera in Hostel 6. This document provides guidelines for: Planning a trip to the Dera Requesting Hostel 6 accommodations Travelling to India In-transit accommodations at the Delhi Satsang Centre Travel to Dera Hostel 6 facilities Other Dera facilities Your country may provide supplemental information concerning passports, visas, airlines, and local policies and procedures. Contact your local Secretary or Accommodation Coordinator for any supplemental guidelines. * * * The Dera is a place of spiritual retreat. The Master is the perfect host and we must strive to be perfect guests who gracefully accept the hospitality offered. While at Dera, it is essential that we have consideration for the sevadars at the hostel and our fellow guests. It is important to be sensitive to different customs, values, behaviour, dress, and general demeanour. We have been given the great privilege of being invited to practise the Sant Mat way of life in the presence of the living Master during our Dera stay. The following information is provided to assist you in planning your visit to the Dera. If you have any questions or comments concerning this information, you may contact the Accommodation Coordinator for Hostel 6 in your sangat. Dera belongs to all satsangis and everybody has a claim and a right to this Dera. We are all the host here and nobody is the guest here. Whosoever is a satsangi, he s the host, and those who are seekers, they are the guests. Maharaj Charan Singh 1

4 PART 1 PLANNING YOUR DERA VISIT HOSTEL 6 SESSIONS THE MASTER WELCOMES satsangis of non-indian origin from overseas to visit the Dera during one of four sessions held annually between October and April: October, December, February, and March. The duration of each session is approximately three weeks. Satsangis may attend only one session out of the four. Since the precise session dates vary slightly from year to year, you should verify the exact dates before planning your trip. You can obtain this information from your sangat Secretary or Hostel 6 Accommodation Coordinator. Please note that no one should arrive at the Dera prior to the opening day of the session. All guests should plan to leave the Dera by the evening of the last day of the session. Problems with flight connections or hotel bookings are not considered valid reasons to arrive earlier or to extend your stay beyond the closing date of the session. Overseas visitors travelling to the Dera who are eligible to stay in Hostel 6 may stay for one night at the transit guest house at the Delhi satsang Centre at Pusa Road, provided they are arriving directly from abroad and are in direct transit to the Dera. At Dera, visitors are accommodated in Hostel 6. It is a compound consisting of several hostel buildings, a dining hall, a meeting hall, a dispensary, and several other facilities, and is reserved only for those guests staying in Hostel 6. All guest rooms have attached (en-suite) bathrooms. Keep in mind that alcoholic beverages, cigarettes, and other tobacco products, and illegal drugs are not permitted in the Delhi Satsang Centre or the Dera. Smoking is strictly prohibited. Cell phones, smartphones and cameras are not allowed to be used in Hostel 6 or anyplace within Dera. If you have brought them to Dera, you will need to deposit them at the Hostel 6 office upon arrival, and you will not be able to access them for information stored on them. This also means you will not be able to use your smart phone as an alarm clock, so please be sure to carry a separate small alarm clock. The fact that a large numbers of satsangis from many different countries visit the Dera each session means that flexibility and adaptability are essential. Love and mutual cooperation can overcome any difficulties that may arise. As Maharaj Charan Singh said: Wherever there is a sangat, there is a Dera. Dera is not a place made of bricks and mortar and other things. Dera is made of the devotees, of the lovers of the Lord, of the seekers of the Father. That is Dera. When the sangat is there, Dera is there. Without the sangat, there is no Dera at all. The Dera is just your love, your harmony, your affection, your understanding, and your cooperation with each other. That is Dera. WHO CAN STAY IN HOSTEL 6 Initiates from overseas of non-indian origin; In the case of non-indian married couples, if either spouse is not initiated, then he/she can stay in Hostel 6 only if accompanied by the initiated spouse; In the case of mixed couples, when one spouse is Indian and the other is non-indian, the Indian spouse is entitled to stay in Hostel 6 only if the non-indian spouse is initiated, and only if they are accompanied by the initiated non-indian spouse. Keep in Mind... The journey to India and the onward journey to Dera are very strenuous, and medical care at Dera is limited. People with serious pre-existing medical conditions are requested not to visit the Dera. If you have health problems you should talk to your sangat Secretary or Accommodation Coordinator and learn about the difficulties of the trip. You should also consult your doctor to determine whether it is medically advisable and physically feasible to undertake such a journey, while keeping in mind the limited medical resources at Dera should your condition worsen. 4
5 Those guests who come with serious medical issues, or who develop serious medical issues while at Dera and require frequent medical intervention or hospitalization, will be restricted from future visits to the Dera and will require medical clearance in writing from a doctor before they are allowed to visit the Dera again. Anyone 85 years or older must obtain a certificate/letter from a licensed medical physician stating that they are medically fit to undertake the journey to India without assistance. Pregnant women are discouraged from visiting Dera, as complications may arise during their stay. No prior permission is needed from the Dera Management to visit the Dera during the sessions. However, all visitors are required to submit their travel information as outlined on the following pages. Satsangis from overseas of non-indian origin are not permitted to visit the Dera at any other time during the year outside of the official session dates. Hostel 6 guests are now permitted to fly into the airport at Amritsar. Please read further in this document for specific guidelines. Satsangis from overseas of non-indian origin are not permitted to commute from outside Dera. Guests of Hostel 6 are not permitted to come and go. If you leave Dera, you will forfeit the rest of your stay. Guests are not permitted to stay anywhere other than the room provided for them by Hostel 6 sevadars. There are no facilities for /fax, or WiFi access to the Internet at the Dera. WHO CANNOT STAY IN HOSTEL 6 Situations sometimes arise when the Dera Management is compelled to refuse accommodation to certain visitors. Please keep in mind that Dera is unable to accommodate the following people: Children are not permitted to stay in Hostel 6, even with visiting parents. Parents should not bring their children to the Dera. People who are unable to look after themselves. Any person with a serious medical or psychiatric condition, needing constant medical care. People who have come to the Dera against the advice of their local satsang Secretary or Representative. Anyone 85 years and older who has not obtained the required certificate/letter, as described above. If the Sevadar in charge of Hostel 6 finds that the conduct of any satsangi while at the Dera is unbecoming to a satsangi and crosses the bounds of propriety, he/she may be asked to leave Dera immediately. Seekers from Overseas (of non-indian origin) Seekers from overseas (those not initiated) are not allowed to visit the Dera and will not be given accommodation. This pertains even to seekers who may have already applied for initiation but are not yet initiated. The only exception is a non-initiated spouse of an initiate, who is permitted to visit the Dera, but only if accompanied by their initiated spouse. The impression that all seekers will be accommodated at the Dera, even for a limited time, is not correct. ASSISTANCE BY THE DELHI SATSANG CENTRE Most people fly to New Delhi, India, the main international gateway to India.. Guests generally take a train from Delhi to Beas station or they can fly from Delhi into Raja Sansi International Airport (ATQ), Amritsar. The Delhi Satsang Centre has a guest house for overseas satsangis staying in Hostel 6 who are in direct transit to and from the Dera. Accommodation is available there for one night in each direction. The Delhi Satsang Centre guest house will receive guests starting one day prior to each Dera session and up to one day following the close of each Dera session. If you plan to arrive in Delhi more than one day before your scheduled departure to Dera, (perhaps to attend the Master s satsang programme in Delhi or for some other reason), you will need to make your own accommodation arrangements in a hotel or elsewhere. Please be advised that in such cases you cannot move to the Delhi Satsang Centre guest house for the night before travelling to the Dera. The guest house serves as a facility for transit passengers only. Consequently, if you are not staying at the 5
6 Delhi Satsang Centre, you will have to purchase your own train or plane tickets to Dera and arrange your own transportation to the Delhi train station or to the Delhi Airport. The Delhi Satsang Centre will make only train bookings to and from Dera and only for visiting overseas satsangis who are staying at Pusa Road on their way to Dera. Requests for train tickets, both to Dera and back from Dera to Delhi, should be made on the Accommodation Request Form. Visitors are now permitted to fly into Amritsar but are responsible for their own arrangements including their plane tickets as well as getting from the Amritsar airport to the Dera. See below for more details. Satsangis and seekers from overseas are permitted to attend Master s satsangs in Delhi and Mumbai but not at any other locations in India. Keep in mind that although visitors are welcome to attend these satsangs, they must make their own hotel bookings and local transportation arrangements. No facilities or accommodations will be provided by either the Delhi or Mumbai Satsang Centres, nor will transport be provided to the satsang venue. MAKING YOUR HOSTEL 6 ACCOMMODATION REQUEST To visit Dera, you must submit a Hostel 6 Accommodation Request in advance of your visit. You are advised to make it 120 days in advance in order to obtain your desired train bookings. You must submit your request using the new Hostel 6 Accommodation System. Forms mailed or faxed directly to the Delhi Satsang Centre will not be accepted. Based on your country s policies, there are two ways an Accommodation request can be made using the Hostel 6 Accommodation System. All countries offer the option of obtaining a paper Hostel 6 Accommodation Request Form that can be filled out by an individual or couple and submitted through the country s Hostel 6 Accommodation Coordinator, who then will submit the request online. Some countries permit individuals to register themselves through their country Hostel 6 Accommodation Coordinator, allowing them to gain access to the online Hostel 6 Accommodation System, fill in their own electronic Accommodation Request Form, and submit it themselves over the Internet. In either case, all visitors will receive a confirmation of their request. You can contact your local sangat Secretary, Hostel 6 Accommodation Coordinator, or your Representative concerning these procedures. Guidelines for filling out a Hostel 6 Accommodation Request Form, either online or using a paper form to be sent to your Coordinator, are as follows: You may include your spouse on your form. If your spouse is of Indian origin or is not initiated, they must travel with you to Dera, but can leave Dera before you (not after you). Much of the information requested on the form is mandatory; you will not be able to submit the form without the mandatory information. If you or your accompanying spouse is 85 years or older, you must obtain a certificate/letter from a licensed medical physician stating that you are medically fit to undertake the journey to India without assistance. This certificate/letter, along with a list of any medications, must be recent and must be brought with you to Hostel 6. Your travel plans are mandatory information, so make sure you have finalized your airline bookings and know which train you plan to take to Dera or which flight into Amritsar. If you plan to stay at the Delhi Satsang Centre and want the sevadars to purchase your train ticket to Dera, as well as your return train ticket from Dera back to Delhi, make sure you finalize the dates and trains you plan to take. If you don t have a passport, apply for one early. If you have a passport, check and make sure it is still valid and will not expire within 6 months of your arrival in India. Apply for a tourist visa with validity dates that adequately cover your trip. You may also apply for an online Indian e-tourist visa (visa on-arrival). Visit the website for information and to apply. Currently this type of visa can be obtained 4 to120 days prior to travel to India and is valid for only 60 days upon arrival in India. Make your Hostel 6 Accommodation Request for this type of visa by selecting Visa on-arrival in the visa type pull-down menu on the online form. As it is not recommended that women travel alone by taxi at night, the Delhi Satsang Centre has offered to assist women travelling alone by arranging for private taxis to pick them up at the 6
7 airport and take them to the Satsang Centre. If you wish to use this service, check the appropriate box on the form. This service is only for women travelling alone and no one else should request it. You will need to pay the fare in Rupees to the taxi driver on your arrival at the Delhi Satsang Centre so you may need to change money at the Delhi airport. If your plans change please notify Pusa Road so that a driver is not sent unnecessarily and you will be responsible for the payment. Women traveling alone and taking domestic flights from Delhi or other Indian cities into Amritsar will NOT be met at the Amritsar airport. However, if they are flying alone internationally, directly into Amritsar, then they can request on their ereservation Form to be met at the airport in Amritsar. Even if you are arranging your own train tickets and do not wish the Delhi Satsang Centre to make your arrangements, it is important that you provide the full information about your travel and train arrangements. The information you submit is used to arrange transport from the Beas train station to Dera and to accurately manage room assignments and meals. This information can be put in the Comments Section of the ereservation form if a suitable selection is not available in the form itself. The form identifies the trains and classes of travel that can be purchased for you. The Morning Shatabdi and Evening Shatabdi trains are recommended. Train tickets cannot be purchased after you have boarded the train. Every effort will be made to obtain tickets for the train and class of travel you request but availability cannot be guaranteed, so please be flexible. The earlier you make your reservation, the better the chance of obtaining the bookings you request. If you plan to purchase train tickets yourself, tickets can be purchased at the train station, through travel agents, or by a Delhi hotel if you are staying at one. Online services, such as or currently require an Indian mobile phone number to register with them, which may not be an option for most foreigners. An E-ticket cannot be cancelled or changed at Dera as there are no Internet facilities and it can only be done online. Indicate in the appropriate Comments sections of the form whether you have any minor physical disabilities that may require special attention or consideration. Although you will receive a confirmation of your Accommodation Request, confirmation of the train and class of travel will not be provided until you arrive at the Delhi Satsang Centre. If you change or cancel your trip, please immediately submit a change or cancellation request using the same method you used to submit your initial request. Changes or cancellations to train tickets will incur an Indian Railways change fee that you will be responsible to pay. Return (Dera to Delhi) train tickets can be purchased at Dera if you did not arrive with them, but it is strongly recommended that you obtain your return tickets before you arrive at Dera to make sure you get the date, train and class of travel you want. Train tickets will no longer be changed at Dera except in approved situations. GROUPS OF 12 OR MORE TRAVELLING TOGETHER TO DELHI For people travelling in groups of 12 or more on the same flight from their home country to Delhi, their country s H6 eres Coordinator should contact the H6 Help Desk and provide the following information: flight details, names, and eres numbers of those in the group. Also identify who is the group leader. Pusa Road will then arrange an appropriate-size bus to meet them at the airport and take them to Pusa Road. A bus will also be arranged to take them either to the train or back to the airport for a flight to Amritsar. 7
8 PREPARATIONS FOR TRAVEL In preparing for your trip, make sure that... your passport is current and will not expire within 6 months of your arrival in India. your flight bookings are made as early as possible, as the Hostel 6 session dates coincide with India s peak travel periods and flights are often sold out several months in advance. you have allowed at least 60 minutes between connecting flights to minimize the risk of lost luggage. you obtain an Indian visa. An Indian Tourist Visa is required for visitors from most countries. Your airline or travel agent can advise you if a visa is required. Visas can be obtained from the Indian Embassy or Consulates in your country, their official websites, through a travel agent, or online if the country is approved for e-visas on arrival. Be sure to ask for a visa that will cover the duration of your entire trip. you have sufficient funds for your trip, to cover any unforeseen eventualities. You should always carry some cash and not rely soley on debit/credit cards. you have a sufficient supply of any prescription drugs you will need. you obtain required or recommended immunizations. When travelling from most countries, there are no required immunizations to enter India. Travel agents and airlines should be able to guide you regarding requirements. There are, however, several recommended immunizations for people travelling to India. At least eight weeks before departure, discuss recommended immunizations with your physician or public health service. Another good resource for this information is the website of the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention at you have made photocopies of your passport, airline tickets, Indian visa, immunization record, and other documents, and have packed them separately from the originals. In case you lose the originals, the photocopies will allow for easy replacement. you have emergency telephone numbers for your family members, account numbers and emergency telephone numbers for credit card companies, and serial numbers for travellers cheques. you have confirmed with your airline your eggless vegetarian meals at least 3 days before departure. IN CASE OF EMERGENCY Give the main Dera telephone numbers listed below to your family members or other contact persons for use in case of emergency. The Dera switchboard will answer and they should ask for Hostel 6. During the daytime in India, the Hostel 6 phone is answered by office staff and a message will be left for you. If they are unable to reach you by this method, they can contact your Secretary or Representative for further advice. The Dera s Main Switchboard numbers are: or , ask for Ext. 226 (Hostel 6) WEATHER AT THE DERA The weather varies from year to year, but the following table will give you some idea of the temperatures and conditions to expect. Sometimes the allowance is calculated by actual weight and sometimes by number and size of pieces. Check with your travel agent or airline. Clearly mark both the inside and the outside of your luggage with your name, address and telephone number. It is wise to carry important toiletries, personal items, essential medicines, and a change of clothes in your carry-on bag, in case your large luggage is lost in transit. Make sure you comply with the airport security rules for liquid container sizes in carry-on bags. It is also convenient to take in your carry-on whatever you will need for your trip from Delhi to Dera (toilet paper or facial tissues, antiseptic wipes, drinking water, snacks). As no tailoring or ready-made clothes are available for purchase at the Dera, it is important to have clothing appropriate for the climate. Being able to add or remove a layer to be warmer or cooler is the most sensible approach. Modest casual clothing, easy to wash or clean, is the most practical. Fill it out at the airport and keep a copy for your records. With most airlines you can claim a small payment in cash as an overnight kit allowance. Please confirm with the airline that they will take responsibility to clear the lost luggage through Customs when it arrives, and that they will arrange to deliver it to you at Dera. If they do not offer to do this, then you must stay in Delhi until your luggage arrives because only you can clear your luggage through Customs. However, if the airline agrees to deliver your luggage to the Dera, then you can proceed to the Dera. Most major airlines will do this, and they will deliver the luggage quickly. Please give them the address and phone number of the Dera and indicate that you will be staying in Hostel 6. Also give them the Delhi Satsang Centre s phone number. Address: Radha Soami Satsang Beas, Hostel #6, Dera Baba Jaimal Singh, Beas, District Amritsar, Punjab Phone: However, some airlines do not provide this service. If your airline will not take responsibility to clear the luggage through Customs, then you must stay in Delhi in order to clear your luggage when it arrives. The sevadars at the Delhi Satsang Centre will assist you in travelling to and from the airport, but they cannot clear the luggage through Customs for you. Only you can clear your luggage and you must be present with your passport. When you reach the Delhi Satsang Centre, make sure you give the sevadars at the Foreigners Reception office the full details about your lost luggage. When you reach Dera be sure to tell the Hostel 6 Reception about your lost luggage and provide details. MONEY EXCHANGE Just inside the baggage claim area of the Delhi air terminal, near Customs, are several counters which are open 24 hours a day where you can change money. You should change your money before exiting Customs. You will need to change sufficient funds to cover your taxis in Delhi and your train tickets. US $100 per person will cover these expenses. (Make sure you get some Rupee notes in small denominations of Rs. 100 and less.) There are no facilities to change money at the Delhi Satsang Centre, but there are facilities at the Dera. 10
11 DELHI AIRPORT TO THE DELHI SATSANG CENTRE Women Travelling Alone who request airport pickup If you select this reservation option when filling in your accommodation form, after claiming your baggage and passing through Customs. When you exit Customs you will enter the visitors waiting area. You will see many people holding signs for arriving passengers. To help avoid confusion, you are requested to keep walking and proceed to the Costa Coffee stall. The Costa Coffee sign will be clearly visible and is located between exit Gates 6 & 5. The sewadar/driver will be waiting there holding an RSSB sign and your name. In case of difficulty, phone Pusa Road at (011) and ask for Foreigners Reception. Please note that if you selected the airport pick-up option when you made your reservation, but afterwards decide to arrange your own transport from the airport and have not cancelled your pick-up request, or if you missed your flight connections and do not arrive at your scheduled time, you will be expected to pay for the taxi that was sent to the airport to pick you up. Pick-up for Groups of 12 or more travelling together to Delhi For groups of 12 or more who are travelling on the same flight and who have informed the H6 Help Desk in advance, Pusa Road will have arranged an appropriate-size bus to meet you at the airport. A bus will also take the group either to the train station or back to the airport for a flight to Amritsar depending on the mode of travel to Dera. Metered and Pre-Paid Taxis from the airport Taxis are located just outside exit Gates 5 & 6. Look for the Radio Taxi signs where the white Radio Taxis are lined up waiting. Radio Taxis are metered and charge per kilometer and you pay upon arrival at your destination. The cheapest other option is the Black & Yellow pre-paid Taxis. These are also located also outside the terminal opposite pillar No. 12. The Radio Taxis are considered more safe and reliable than the Black & Yellow Taxis. Things you should be aware of concerning taxis Some taxi drivers may want to take you to a particular hotel (they get a commission), and will make excuses such as: The Satsang Ghar is closed, or There is a strike, so you need to stay overnight in a hotel. Insist on being taken to the Satsang Centre if that is where you are going. Sevadars are on duty 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. It is quite common that taxi drivers fuel their cars when they have a fare, so be aware that they may stop at a petrol station after exiting the airport. However, do not give the driver any extra money for fuel even if he claims it is necessary, as fuel costs are included in the fare. Women should avoid wearing expensive jewellery, which might attract attention and increase the risk of theft and/or assault. Often taxi drivers have a second person with them whose job it is to help fix flat tyres and other related duties. If you are travelling alone and the extra man in the taxi makes you feel uncomfortable, you can ask that the second person not accompany the driver. Tipping is acceptable and generally expected. 10% of the fare is customary. Foreigners Reception at the Delhi Satsang Centre is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If you have any difficulty you can telephone the sevadars at: (011) or and (088) or Note: If the taxi driver is confused, tell him: Radha Soami Satsang Beas, near the Siddhartha Hotel and next to the BL Kapoor Hospital, off Pusa Road on Guru Ravidas Marg. Enter the Satsang Centre from Gate #3. ARRIVAL AT THE DELHI SATSANG CENTRE When you arrive at the Delhi Satsang Centre, sevadars will direct you to the Foreigners Reception Office. You will be asked for your passport and will be checked into a room. You will be asked to pay for your train ticket(s) if you have requested tickets. 11
12 Room Arrangements: If you are travelling alone, you may be asked to share a room. The guest house at Pusa Road has a limited number of rooms. If you arrive during the first two days of a session or leave during the last two days, it is almost certain that you will have to share a room, and often with more than one person. Those days are the most crowded, with the maximum number of guests. If you feel inconvenienced by sharing a room, then it is recommended that you plan your trip so as to avoid staying at Pusa Road during these peak periods, or else make your own arrangements in a Delhi hotel. Train Tickets: If you are staying at Pusa Road and had requested them to purchase train tickets for you, you will need to pay for your train tickets in local currency. Come prepared with notes of Rs. 100 or less. Do not expect the sevadars to loan you money for your train tickets or to exchange your currency for rupees. Please remember to take care of your money-changing needs at the airport on your arrival in India. Luggage tags will be given to you and must be put on all your bags to facilitate their being brought to your train coach/seat. Food: The sevadars prepare meals for those staying at the Satsang Centre, which are served at set times. Please be considerate and notify them if you do not plan to be at a meal. Do not drink water from the faucets (taps) at the Satsang Centre only drink the water supplied by the sevadars or bottled water which you can purchase there. It s a good habit to travel in India with a bottle of water. Some Rules for the Delhi Satsang Centre If you go out during the day, lock your room and return the room keys to the office. Inform the Foreigner s Reception office if you plan to leave the satsang grounds. All guests will be provided with a Satsang Centre ID Card which should be taken with you if you leave the satsang compound for any reason and should be shown to Security at the gate when you return. This will facilitate your admittance back into the satsang compound. If you wish to meet with a local friend, please arrange to meet them somewhere else and not at Pusa Road. Any exception needs to be discussed first with the Foreigners Reception sevadars. Photography, smoking, and alcohol are strictly prohibited anywhere in the Delhi Satsang complex. Do not offer any gifts, food, or tips to any sevadars. On departing, do not leave anything behind in your rooms, including unwanted items, such as books, food, suitcases, etc. Do not dispose of such items in the trash; take them with you. Stay clothed while in your room; respect the cultural modesty norms. Return your room key before you depart. If you experience any problems during your stay in Delhi, please give your complaints or suggestions in person or in writing to the sevadar in-charge, Foreigners Reception Office. 12
13 PART 3 TRAVELLING TO DERA TRAVELLING FROM DELHI TO DERA BY TRAIN WHEN YOU CHECK IN AT THE FOREIGNERS RECEPTION OFFICE AT THE DELHI SATSANG CENTRE, the sevadar will tell you what time to be ready to leave for the train station. The sevadars will arrange your transportation to the train station and let you know how much to pay for the bus or the taxi driver and porter. (Do not negotiate with anyone directly.) The sevadars will make sure you get on the correct train. Please note: Diligence is essential from the time you reach the station until the train departs. Pickpocketing and purse-snatching are frequent occurrence at the New Delhi Train Station. This is especially true during the period after you get on the train and are waiting for the train to depart. Never keep your valuables in your small handbag or purse, as these are the main targets for purse-snatching. A common technique is for someone (even the porter) to distract you to look the other way, while someone else grabs your small bag that you have just placed on your seat. A vulnerable time is when you are looking to place your bags on the overhead luggage rack. Belt packs or purses worn under your clothes are a good place to keep your passport, airline ticket and money. Keep an eye on all your luggage while you are on the train platform waiting for the train to depart. You should also keep an eye on your bags when the train stops at any of the stations along the route to Beas, because many bags look alike and someone may take your bag by mistake. Keep your train ticket in your possession, and do not hand it over to anyone. A conductor will check it after the train leaves the station. If someone at the station asks to see your ticket and informs you that there is a problem with the ticket with which he can help you, do not listen to him. This is a common scam to get money from you. Never accept any food from strangers or unknown fellow passengers. Thieves posing as passengers will often put drugs in food or drinks which can render you unconscious, after which your valuables will be stolen. This is particularly true on sleeper trains. SUGGESTIONS FOR THE TRAIN JOURNEY Do not purchase any food on the train except packaged foods, such as chips, nuts and biscuits, which are considered safe. Food is served on the Shatabdi trains as part of the ticket price. While some people regard this food as safe, we recommend that you avoid it since local standards of hygiene may not be the same as those to which you are accustomed. It s a good idea, therefore, to bring some snack foods from home that will tide you over until you reach the Dera, especially if you arrive in Delhi late at night and are leaving early in the morning for the train. The Satsang Centre has a canteen that sells some snacks and bottled water, but it is closed late at night. ARRIVING AT THE BEAS STATION The stop before Beas is Jalandhar City which is about 30 minutes from the Beas station. It is advisable to get your luggage down and placed near the Exit Door, as the train stops for only two minutes in Beas. If you re travelling by Shatabdi, the attendants will assist you. If there are a lot of people getting off in Beas, the train will usually stay in the station a little longer to allow everyone to get off, but it is a good idea to get ready before the train reaches the Beas station. (Note: Some trains stop twice at Jalandhar. The first stop is Jalandhar Cantonment and the second stop is Jalandhar City. Beas is the next stop after Jalandhar City.) As soon as you get off the train, identify your bags quickly to ensure that none have been inadvertently left behind on the train. Sevadars will meet you upon arrival at the Beas Railway Station and will escort you to the Dera. The sevadars will help you with your luggage and put it in a Dera vehicle. You will travel to the Dera in a Dera bus or minibus. It is a distance of only five kilometres. 13
14 TRAVELLING TO DERA BY AIR VIA AMRITSAR (INTERNATIONALLY & DOMESTICALLY) It is now permissible for Hostel 6 guests to fly into Amritsar s Raja Sansi International Airport (ATQ), Amritsar. There are two ways you can fly into Amritsar: 1. Internationally (Direct from overseas into Amritsar) 2. Domestically (From another city in India, such as from New Delhi) It must be stressed that your arrangements for flying into and out of Amritsar are your own personal responsibility. If travelling from Delhi, the Pusa Road Satsang centre will not support arrangements for flights to Amritsar other than helping arrange taxis from Pusa Road to the Delhi airport. Dealing with flight delays or flight cancellations will be your responsibility. If you are not an experienced traveller you may still wish to avail of Pusa Road s help in arranging your train tickets and putting you on the train, and Dera picking you up at the Beas Station. This arrangement will continue. The airport at Amritsar is a small, regional airport with limited infrastructure and limited capacity. There can be delays at baggage collection and at Immigration if flying internationally. Flight delays are common with domestic flights, so ample time needs to be given if connecting to an international flight in Delhi on your return. It is important to carry a paper print-out of your airline ticket as it, along with your passport, are required to be shown at the security check when entering the airport terminal. December Fog Long flight delays and cancellations are common in the month of December when dense fog envelops much of North India. It is recommended that you take the train in December to avoid such problems. Those who decide to take the risk and fly in and out of Amritsar in December should book flights departing after 12:00 pm (midday) to about 6:00 pm. Morning flights are most affected with delays due to the fog, and the fog returns again at night. Leaving Dera one day before a connecting flight is recommended to be safe and avoid missing your international connection. POINTS ABOUT FLYING TO AMRITSAR AIRPORT Single women travelling alone: Those arriving by international flights will be met at Amritsar airport if they have requested it on their ereservation form. Those flying domestically to Amritsar will NOT be met. It should also be noted that most aircraft have to park on the tarmac without the use of a connecting air bridge. Movable stairs are used to get passengers on or off the planes. Passengers must carry their carry-on items up and down the stairs. A bus is used to transport passengers to the terminal which has a few steps up. This makes it challenging for those with mobility issues. For those flying into Amritsar, both domestic and internationally, individuals are primarily on their own. However, Dera will provide the following limited support: a. On the first three days of each Hostel 6 session (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) Dera will send sevadars to the Amritsar airport, between the hours of 7am to 7pm, to assist arriving Hostel 6 guests. On all other days and times guests will be responsible for their own arrangements to reach Dera. Travel to Dera is through the Pre-Paid Taxis available at the airport as explained below. b. Groups of 12 or more arriving into Amritsar airport: Pre-arranged Groups of 12 or more arriving together on the same flight will be met at any time, regardless of the day or time of their arrival. This includes both domestic and international flights. Flight details and the passengers names and eres numbers must be provided in advance by the country s H6 eres Coordinator to the H6 Help Desk at least two weeks in advance of their arrival date. The guests will be responsible for paying for the transportation charges to Dera. It is also recommended that the Country Head sends a copy of the group details to OSC for confirmation of the Group s arrival. 14
15 c. Those travelling on an international flight into Amritsar will have to go through Immigration and Customs. At times there can be long queues at Immigration so be prepared. d. Pre-Paid Taxi: There is one pre-paid taxi booth inside the terminal in the Arrival Area. It has a big sign that says CAR SERVICE TAXI. They are offering a discounted rate to satsangis travelling to Dera. The current price is about Rs. 1,080 for a small car and Rs. 1,230 for a large car. This is subject to change without notice. It is highly recommended that you carry at least Rs 2,000 on arrival for taxi fare in the event the money exchange at the airport is closed when you arrive. The drivers should be told that you are going to: Radha Soami Satsang Beas. e. Money Exchange: There is one money exchange counter at the airport located next to the Pre-Paid taxi booth in the Arrival area. They say they are open during all flight arrivals. It is a private company and has a large sign that says Money Exchange. f. Weight Allowances: Many of the domestic airlines within India have a weight allowance of only one check-in bag of 15 kg (22 lbs.) in Economy class. If your domestic ticket is part of your international ticket, then the international weight allowance may apply, depending on several factors. It is very important that you check with your airline in advance concerning weight allowances and size restrictions on domestic flights to avoid overweight charges. Overweight charges range from Rs 100 to Rs 500 per kg of excess weight. g. Travel time from the Amritsar airport to the Dera is approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. h. It is also requested that guests do not arrive at Hostel 6 before 7:00am. LOST LUGGAGE In case your luggage does not arrive with you on your flight, you should follow this procedure: Before leaving the airport obtain a mishandled baggage report or the property irregularity report from your airline. If the airline agrees to deliver your luggage to the Dera, then you can proceed to the Dera. If they do not offer to deliver your luggage then you still can proceed to Dera but may have to return to the Amritsar Airport to claim your luggage and clear it through Customs. Most major airlines will deliver the luggage to you quickly. Please give them the address and phone number of the Dera and indicate that you will be staying in Hostel 6. Address: Radha Soami Satsang Beas, Hostel #6, Dera Baba Jaimal Singh, Beas, District Amritsar, Punjab Phone: When you reach Dera be sure to tell the Hostel 6 Reception about your lost luggage and provide details. IMPORTANT: Arrival at Dera by Taxi or Private Car If arriving at Dera by Taxi or private car it is necessary to carry a copy of your Hostel 6 ereservation Confirmation with you to show to Dera Security at the Dera entrance gate. Otherwise Taxis and private cars are not allowed into the Dera. An exception has been arranged with Dera Security for Hostel 6 guests if they show Security a copy of their Hostel 6 ereservation Confirmation . Flights from Amritsar airport on Departure from Dera The Hostel 6 office will help with transportation arrangements from Dera to the Amritsar airport using the Dera taxis or bus. Guests will be responsible for the payment. Guests will need to make their own transportation arrangements when they land in Delhi. Pusa Road will NOT arrange airport pick-up. 15
16 PART 4 YOUR STAY AT THE DERA WHEN YOU ARRIVE AT THE DERA, you will be taken to the Hostel 6 Reception office to check in. Be prepared to hand over your passport and mobile devices on arrival. You may pick up your passport when you hear an announcement that passports are ready to be picked up. Your mobile devices should be picked up the day before you leave. A room will be assigned to you by the Hostel 6 sevadars. If you are not travelling with a spouse, you may be requested to share a room. If you are travelling with a friend, you can request to share with your friend. That will help the sevadars. If not, please accept graciously the roommate assigned to you. People who come alone and have a tendency to snore are requested to inform the sevadars, as snorers are generally roomed together. Mobile phones, smart phones and cameras are banned from Hostel 6, and if brought to Dera, will need to be deposited at the Hostel 6 office upon arrival when your room is assigned. They will be returned to you upon your departure. Laptop computers are allowed. You will also be issued a wireless device for listening to the simultaneous translation in the morning satsangs and in the evening meetings. You will need to purchase the ear buds for this device for a nominal fee. (You must use only the ear buds supplied at Dera and not your personal ones.) Hostel 6 ID Cards will be issued to all guests. You are requested to carry it with you whenever you leave the Hostel 6 compound. Your Hostel 6 ID Card will be mandatory for you to gain entrance into the new shopping complex and other facilities. Your Hostel 6 ID card will also facilitate your admittance into satsang at the Pandal. You will also need to purchase Smart Cards which are required for making purchases at the shopping complex and for Bhojan Bhandar I, Snack Bar I, and possibly other facilities in future. You can purchase the Smart Cards at the Hostel 6 office using either Rupees or a debit card, however only international Visa and Master Card debit cards work, not country-specific debit cards. You are advised not to rely solely on a debit card for your cash needs when travelling in India. Hostel 6 is a very busy facility accommodating hundreds of people each session from many countries and cultures. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated in following the guidance of the sevadars managing Hostel 6. The sevadars are trying to do their best out of love for the Master. Please treat them with courtesy and consideration. It is appropriate to greet sevadars with folded hands or a friendly nod or smile. Shaking hands, hugging, or other physical contact with Dera sevadars should be avoided, as this is not the local Indian custom. Guests staying at Hostel 6 are not permitted to leave the Dera once they arrive. They cannot take trips to Amritsar, Jalandhar, or even to the Beas station. Once a guest leaves the Dera, they are not permitted to return. Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (abbreviated IIT Roorkee or IITR), formerly University of Roorkee and Thomason College of Civil Engineering, is a publicengineeringuniversity located in Roorkee, Uttarakhand, India. Established in 1847 in British India by the then lieutenant governor, Sir James Thomason, it is the oldest technical institution in Asia. It was given university status in 1949 and was converted into an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in 2001, thus becoming the seventh IIT to be declared.
IIT Roorkee has 21 academic departments covering Engineering, Applied Sciences, Humanities & Social Sciences and Management programs with a strong emphasis on scientific and technological education and research.[1]
IIT Roorkee has a strong entrepreneurial culture, with many alumni who have moved on to found technological and social ventures in India and abroad, and have played an important role in the development of India. Ten alumni have won the Padma awards and twenty five alumni have won the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology. The institute has produced seven chairmen of the Indian Railway Board, chairman of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, more than a hundred secretary-level officers in the Government of India, two presidents of the Confederation of Indian Industry, Governors of states of India, Members of Parliament, chairmen of University Grants Commission (India), six directors of the Indian Institutes of Technology, Chancellors and Vice-Chancellors of prominent Indian Universities, and presidents of Engineering and Scientific organizations like the Indian Institution of Engineers, the Indian National Science Academy and the Indian National Academy of Engineering.[2]

History[edit]
The institution has its origins in a class started in 1845 to train local youth in engineering to assist in public works then beginning.[3] In 1847 it was officially established.[4] It was renamed as the Thomason College of Civil Engineering in 1854 in honour of its founder, Sir James Thomason, lieutenant governor 1843–53.[3] The first Indian to graduate from the Roorkee college was Rai Bahadur Kanhaiya Lal in 1852.[5]
On 21 September 2001, an ordinance issued by the Government of India declared it as the nation's seventh Indian Institute of Technology, renaming it to the current name, Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee. The ordinance was converted into an act by the Parliament to make IIT Roorkee an 'Institution of National Importance'.[6]
The Department of Civil Engineering was established in 1847 and is the oldest engineering department in India.[7] The Electrical Engineering department of the Thomson College was established in the year 1897, and was one of the earliest such specializations in the world.[8] The Architecture department is first in India in instituting a master's degree course in Architecture (M. Arch.) in the year 1969–70.[9]
In 1978 Institute of Paper Technology, Saharanpur was merged with the then University of Roorkee. The Institute of Paper Technology was established as School of Paper Technology by the Government of India in 1964, with an aid from the Royal Swedish Government. The school was renamed as the Institute of Paper Technology in July 1968 and subsequently Department of Paper Technology in July 1992.[10]
In 2001, it was converted into an Indian Institute of Technology, becoming the seventh IIT.
Administration[edit]
All IITs follow the same organization structure which has President of India as visitor at the top of the hierarchy. Directly under the president is the IIT Council. Under the IIT Council is the board of governors of each IIT.Under the board of governors is the director, who is the chief academic and executive officer of the IIT. Under the director, in the organizational structure, comes the deputy director. Under the director and the deputy director, come the deans, heads of departments, registrar.[11]
Academics[edit]
IIT Roorkee offers academic programmes in Engineering, Technology, Applied Sciences, and Management. It runs eleven undergraduate (UG), one integrated dual degree, sixty one postgraduate (PG) and several doctoral programmes.[12]
The institute admits students to B.Tech., B.Arch. and integrated M.Sc. integrated M.Tech courses through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) conducted at centers all over India. Before being converted into an IIT, the university selected students through the Roorkee Entrance Exam (REE) conducted on an All-India level. The selectivity of REE was close to 0.25%. After IIT-JEE, it was considered to be the second toughest engineering entrance examination in India.[13] Admission to PG programmes in engineering and architecture is on the basis of GATE score and/or a written test and interview. For PG programmes in fundamental sciences admission is based on the Joint Admission Test (JAM).[14]
Along with the engineering courses, the institute offers a two-year residential MBA program for which the admissions, starting from 2011, will be done on the basis of Common Admission Test, thus replacing Joint Management Entrance Test (JMET) previously conducted by the IITs.[15] The institute also offers an interdisciplinary program in computer applications leading to a degree in Master of computer applications (MCA). The MCA program is a three-year course and admission for the course is through JAM.
According to statistics published by institute in 2007–08 4137 students were enrolled in the institute across all programs. The student-to-academic-staff ratio was 2.6:1 and that of UG/PG students was 1.4:1.[16]

The IIT Roorkee Alumni Association was established and registered in 1940 as a society under the Society Registration Act. The association has 31 local chapters in the country and three chapters abroad.[53] The association encourages the alumni to take interest in the activities of the alma mater and promotes relations between alumni.
Every year the association hosts Diamond, Golden and Silver jubilee functions, where alumni graduating 60, 50 and 25 years earlier are invited. Since 2005 the association has also been awarding a Distinguished Alumni Award to alumni who have made immense contributions in the fields of Academic/Research, Social Sciences, Engineering & Public Administration, Corporate Development/Entrepreneurship and Service to the Society.[70]
The Student Alumni Mentorship Programme has been initiated by the association to help young students in achieving their career aspirations. The alumni visit the institute to interact with the students and staff and share their suggestions.
